About this course
This course examines how academic health institutions can sustain and advance health equity amid rapidly changing legal, policy, political, financial, and institutional conditions. Moving beyond traditional DEI approaches, participants explore Strategic Responsiveness as a leadership discipline for determining what must be preserved, what should evolve, and what new capabilities must be built to advance equitable health outcomes while remaining aligned with institutional mission and current law. The course connects health equity to the full academic health enterprise, including patient care, medical and health-professions education, research and clinical trials, workforce and faculty development, community engagement, access, population health, and organizational culture. Participants examine how changing language and organizational structures can coexist with continued institutional commitment, and how leaders can distinguish symbolic change from genuine capability loss. The course equips academic health leaders to assess their environment, understand risk and opportunity, identify enduring health-equity priorities, engage diverse communities, and develop lawful, evidence-based, mission-aligned strategies that translate institutional values into measurable improvements in access, experience, quality, and health outcomes.
